  3. Although this PMC is in Srilanka the degree is awarded by a Russian university. So the value of the degree should be paid to that university. So we can't say that PMCs will stop money draining to foreign countries.

Can't u see this Ano..?? I agree that some part of the money will be drained by Russia..(For this the only cure is to establish our own sri lankan universities..will it be happened in 100 decades..?? )

But PCM would supply so many job opportunities within the country..and more than that do u know how much of Sri Lankan money that we are spending as our accommodation fees and as living expenses??It's around RS.400,000 + almost RS.100,000 for Transportation per year..I hope you could calculate for 6 years..And that's only for a one person.and only for the Summer batch this year they admitted more than 60 Sri lankan Students only in my university..But That's only in My university..and Here in Russia there are more than 30 major med universities where our students are admitted for..And when you think about number of the world wide universities...What a crime brother...!!!Whole bulk of money..they are just burnt out to the outer world..

And think about this also..the brothers and sisters who suffering without their parents nearby..If you get sick you can run your home..But can we??...And do you know some students in my these universities..do not get to see their parents for whole 6 years.and even some of them do not get to attend their father's funeral jus 'coz they cannot afford for an extra two way ticket..think about these facts brother..!!

And when we studied on our own money and you guys still studied on the money of the country(which means the part even over parents are still contributing as tax payments..!!!) you people trying to treat us as aliens during the interns!!!..I don't find a word to call you guys..!!

Our country has a huge shortness of Doctors even in 2011.And we spend our own money and just return to our country to serve.(neither me or Do U work without a salary I agree..!!) but as same as you we are using our strengths on the country..

    So just think fairly...
Just don't be such an extremist...!

  8. If you are talking about saving some small fraction of money within the country and stop buying anything imported from other countries. That will save much more than the small fraction of money you are talking about.

And although you are talking about serving our country many of the foreign graduates are migrating to other countries or join the private sector permanently after the internship or ever before it. That's what most of my school friends who are foreign medical graduates now doing. So do you think those who spent more than 6 million to get the degree and join the government sector to work sometimes nearly 15 hours a day in a hospital sometimes even without basic facilities for doctors just for a salary less than 40000? What they will try is to earn what they have spent as quickly as possible. Then where is the service to the poor people of this country you are talking about?

And don't think that we are without the 'suffering' you are talking about. There are so many medical students and doctors who didn't even see their parents for many months because of the commitments they have to make. Other thing is no one has told you that you must do medicine and you have chosen it yourself while it was not the only pathway available for you. So if you choose that pathway you must be ready to face all the circumstances and no point in crying now. We also have faced to so many problems but we didn't complained about them as we must be ready to face them.

Opportunities in government universities are limited I agree. But the solution must be to increasing those opportunities in government sector by boosting the facilities. Starting private universities will not solve the problem as only a percentage less than 5% will be able to afford. Now government is deliberately neglecting the universities. You can understand that if you see what has happened to Rajarata medical faculty. If we can increase it's facilities and establish some more medical colleges how many of people like you will be able to get accommodated? So you people should join hand with us and shout for that. Not for those money sucking PMCs. Now this PMC can accommodate only 50 per a batch for a high price. But if we are going to start a new government medical faculty that number will be high as 200 (for free of charge). So why don't you even make a request to do so while spending hours in various blogs to post pro-PMC posts?

There may be students who are not qualified to enter a government medical faculty but still suitable to study a medical curriculum I agree. But how many of them will be able to enter to that PMC paying such a high price? Definitely less than 5%! So it satisfies only that much low percentage can we say that it is a 'solution' for the problem? No. Then what do you suggest for other 95%?

To enter into any university whether is a private or government the qualifications should be the knowledge and skills. Of course A/L has certain shortcomings I agree. But in the absence of better one we still have to use it. Anyway can someone say parents money is a better 'qualification' than A/L when it comes to PMCs? No.

And don't comment on hatre towards local doctors. What you have mentioned that Srilankan doctors are arrogant group of people. Please go and see in a peripheral hospital how do they serve poor patients. Sometimes they don't even have time to have their meals. All these are for the benefit of patients. If you say we are arrogant as such why are we doing like that?

So please know your facts correctly and comment. Don't just comment out of emotions.

  9. @makulu panchi, it is you people who are arrogant and opportunistic! That is why you people cry only for PMCs and not asking the government to upgrade the facilities in government medical facilities and start new ones. If government do so only those qualified (by A/L) will be able to enter and you people can't use your parents money power. In PMCs you can use that money power. That is why you are crying so much for PMCs.

  12. @Ano at 3.52 pm, you are exactly correct. If new opportunities are created though government medical faculties, only those who succeed their A/Ls will get the chance. But if those 'opportunities' are created though PMCs only some rich idiots trying to 'buy' the MBBS will get the chance. Many of these foreign graduates are of that type. That is why they are so much fond of having PMCs than new government medical faculties.

  18. This is one story I heard from one of my friend who himself is a foreign graduate and awaiting ACT 16. There was one Muslim multimillionaire businessman (please don't get misunderstood. I don't mean any sort of racism here) sent his elder son to England to study medicine. But that father never wanted to make his son a good doctor but to have MBBS as a 'jewelry' and to handle all his businesses. But fortunately that son developed interest in medicine, studied well and became a good doctor and decided to stay in England. Then that stupid father go angry and asked his son to pay all the cost back!!! Then his 2nd son was sent to China to do medicine as their teaching is terrible. He studied with my friend's batch (and did all the 'crazy' things such as clubbing without paying much attention to studies)and passed out although his knowledge is poor and came back to Srilanka as just a 'MBBBS holder'.

So if this PMC is continued like this that will also be filled up with people like that 2nd son. They will never become good doctors but just 'MBBS holders'. So then what will happen to the dignity of our noble profession and the MBBS degree?

  19. @Ano at August 26, 2011 12:27 PM, Yes of course you are exactly correct! That is my experience too. I am also from a leading school in Colombo. I can remember there were a gang of notorious fellows in my both O/L and A/L classes who did all sort of bad things which can't even be mentioned here. They got failed in all 3 subjects in A/L. But using their parents money power they entered in to some private 'degree selling' institutions and bought some degrees and now earning much more than us. (But still the character is the same). So they want to infiltrate in to the field of medicine also. That is why there crying this much for PMCs. But we shouldn't allow that to happen as they will ruin the dignity of our noble profession.

    BTW, A good blog Sabith.

  27. Just to add a note on this, MOST students of local universities do not like private universities in general (not only the private medical faculty). I hardly believe they have a genuine concern about the quality, it's rather the fear of competition.
Life is indeed unfair. This is true for most of us. But that's the way it is. Get use to it guys. Don't envy the more fortunate. Work hard to achieve your goals rather than screwing up someone elses.

  28. Im also a student in a foreign medical college.actually im from USTC as well.i do have a lot to say in this but let me address a few points id like to share with you all

    * No matter what anyone would say,if a person would want to become a doctor & if they do not get their chance through their A/L examination & if they have the ability to spend money, they definitely will consider & implement options such as going abroad for a medical degree.so yes, millions of rupees are lost every year for the simple lack of private medical colleges ( or government ones ) in Sri Lanka.just imagine if there were no private educational institutes in this country for the purpose of "protecting the right to free education" .this country would be crippled from the bottom up for the lack of qualified professionals in various disciplines.the reason this has caused so much debate is that this is as i think the only degree that's not privatized due to the gravity of the job involved.it is true that the medical practitioner must be of excellent quality.but having exams as the act16 is serving the purpose of rooting out potential doctors who don't make the cut.so the argument of their quality does not really apply, for the simple fact that it will be tested prior they practice in this country.if they fail that's their problem.others do not need to pull out their hair & scream at the top of their voices that foreign students fail the act16.because that's why the act16 is there.people are supposed to fail.even local students fail their course exams.that's why exams are there.that's their purpose.if people are failing then its doing its job.the bottom line is the quality assurance of doctors is not at risk for all prospective students must go through this screening procedure to be able to work in this country.so the big issue of questioning the foreign graduate's knowledge & clinical ability would become obsolete for measuring that & assessing it does reside within the boundaries of the medical council of Sri Lanka.so now it should be clear that nobody should "fear" that we the foreign students would run rampant withing hospitals killing patients with evil smiles on their faces for we simply can not work if we don't make the cut.simple & to the point,we must be good enough to work here.i hope everyone would get this point. If people don't acquire the necessary knowledge & have wasted their money, that's their problem.don't you think?

  29. * About the flow of money to other countries, well its called commerce & our country, sad to say, kinda sucks at it.Singapore passed us in this race in just roughly 30 years.just 30.one of the strongest nations in the world,America has a history of about 200 years, whereas we have a written history of over 2000.we must feel very sad about this.for our speed of growth, comparatively is in the minus scales.we are in debt to the world & living off free giveaways from other nations called aid.but the funny side to this is that even being in a global situation as such we still have our pride, perhaps the result of that 2000 years run as a nation.either way,the point is we need all the help we can get.& i propose we start doing everything we can to help the people in this country.to improve their way of life.this petty political differences have only hindered our growth.not strengthened it.
I,with my very own eyes as sabith have stated earlier seen the secondary economic & social growth around our university in Bangladesh.the surrounding area have simply bloomed compared to other areas of the country.also its currency the Taka is at the moment 1.5 times stronger than us.a very very puzzling & troubling matter for out country simply "looks" very much developed & advanced compared to it.hundreds of small businesses & apartments.hotels restaurants & anything from communications to theme parks.there is even a book shop where they speak in fluent Sinhala.just imagine the level of influence just the Sri Lanka community has caused in this foreign land, for there are Kashmiris, Nepali, Bengoli ( locals ), Bhutani, Maldivian, Pakisthani & other nationals learning here.so imagine the amount of secondary economic & social development that has taken place.im not even talking about the tuition fees the students have to pay.simply just think what happens without involvement from the government or the private university whatsoever.its simply amazing & I've always thought what it would be like to have that sort of opportunity back in my beloved homeland.it doesn't not have to be a medical university, anything.simply think about that & with a clear conscious say that having a private university in a rather rural area is not good for our people.in this point i merely want to say that where ever a private university ( or a government one for that matter ) would be placed, the area around it would definitely develop.that level of development depends on the wants & needs of those students.so if it is a private university that accepts foreign students, those needs increase much more than if it were for just local students.so in a developmental point of view,if clearly planned & strongly implemented by the authorities of this country with the proper infrastructure & facilities , there is no denying that it will be a good thing for the students as well as the surrounding population.don't you agree? .Im only stating this for i was merely stunned to literally see the area i live in bloom to life.

  30. * The other thing is that,I don't think the A/L system is at fault.hey, its just like the act16.we need a way to find out people who don't make the cut.& i totally understand why the medical degree requires such a high z score for it is no easy task.i have spent studying for longer than 48 hours straight ( which i know sounds impossible but you'd be surprised with what a lot of Nescafe & lots more determination may accomplish ) & what usually always come to my mind when Im finding something difficult was that they certainly wasn't joking around with those z scores.your mind must be at its sharpest to face the ridiculous amounts of tests & viva exams we face on a regular basis.its not multiple questions.you face your lecturer & he asks you questions & you have to know everything right in order to make it out one of these alive.you cant go "eenie miny moe" on these or simply pull one out of the hat.
Having said that, its perfectly justified, for such a level of professionalism is in fact required, for your going to work with people's lives.not a simple task if you think about it.
so the A/L exam isn't at fault in my eyes.but when you argue that people who only have 3 Cs can have access to medical degrees, well take a look at the university application book that's published every year & look at the z score needed for a student applying from Colombo.its always way over there around 1.9 & up.now look at what you need if your coming from Nuwara Eliya.yea that's right.not so much right?
so if you are arguing that people without 3 As would make it into a private university, hey ! Wake up & look around you,ITS ALREADY HAPPENING!
i have no qualm against all those who do make it into the private university this way.actually its good.Im happy for them.i had a z score of 1.8675 .not that high.i missed medical, dental & veterinary science.but every other university degree course was open for me.but as i lay in my home, someone for about 1.4 z would make it in simply because the government thinks they should "apologize" for not developing the education in certain areas they cant bother about.its not the students fault.its the fault of all those who oppose positive growth in the name of stale, stagnant & unpractical prehistoric political agendas simply created to cause civil unrest in order to make an unstable government hoping that the opposing party may seize power in the next election blaming the ruling party ( i personally do NOT approve the political system in this country but that's another matter entirely )
So the argument that the students in private universities aren't the best of the best in this country, well its already that same way in government universities.just not as much as it would be in a private university.but the fact that there are people in there with not as many As as you would like your doctor to have, breaks the argument altogether.but as you say, these people are not "stupid" ( as on an above comment ,harak ralak nemei ) .they simply didn't do well in an exam.but given the opportunity they would be excellent doctors.just as good as the 3 As people.chances are some of those doctors who came from far away provinces with a low z score are better than the bright ones.chances are you yourself, you the reader, have been treated with one of these doctors.you don't know & you don't care as long as you get the proper care.once you pass the final exam or the act16 & is registered in the Sri Lankan medical council, your a doctor & it doesn't matter about your past.

  31. Those are the arguments i think that are utterly pointless & even had to think about the intellectual capacity of those who propose such absurd arguments.i hope what Ive written is true & i hope i am correct on these points Ive spoken about.correct me please if Im wrong.i do accept feedback be it may positive or negative.also before i finish i have loads more to tell about this topic, but i thought only to speak abut the aspects Ive experienced first hand by myself.

im not talking about the separation & the mental strain of living alone far away from all loved ones studying the most difficult degree in the world for 5 years.Im not from a rich family.thanks to the immense support of my family & great sacrifices,Im able to pursue this noble goal.but as i believe these aspects of the problem would never be appreciated by the people who oppose us.so there would be no point of talking about it.

simply think about this.think unbiased & from your mind.not your heart.then tell me these are not valid.i thank you for your patience & apologize if my comment have offended anyone in anyway.i was merely speaking my mind & had no intention to do so.so please forgive me if that is the case.

to all who are reading this, may you find the right path in your life towards success.i personally believe we must work together & build up this once great nation for our younger generations.with that thought.i will bid you all farewell.until the next time.

( to sabith, are you still in Bangladesh? im in kulshi too. )
